Born Nov. 6, 1947 in Elmira, New York, guitarist / composer Dan Rose moved to New York City at the age of 17 to be closer to it all. In the latter 1960's he lived in San Francisco and studied with Jerry Hahn and John Reible and was influenced by Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow, Kenny Burrell and Jim Hall.
Dan toured and recorded with the "Paul Bley Band" in 1973 and 1974. During this time he was also introduced to the music of Carla Bley, who was a major influence on his composition and musical concept.
During the 1970's Dan Rose was very active in the New York jazz scene. For five years he worked as an organizer and perfomer in Free Life Communications, the organization founded by Dave Liebman and Richie Bierach which promoted "new music" through 60 to 100 concerts and workshops annually.
Dan helped develop and performed in the New York Loft Jazz Celebrations festivals. In 1979 he composed and recorded "CLOSE OPPOSITES," released on the Alacra label. He moved to Europe where he performed in clubs with his own band and as a sideman. In 1981 Dan Rose returned to New York to continue playing in clubs and concentrate on composing. In 1992 he recorded "CONVERSATIONS," released on ENJA RECORDS and features Steve Swallow and John Betsch.
Dan was featured in the book, "Jazz Guitar On Record" by Richard Hetrick. Some of the other musicians he has performed with include Keshevan Maslak, Perry Robinson, Mark Whitecage, Sonny Stitt, Wilbur Little, Marc Johnson, Billy Hart, Thomas Chapin, Arthur Blythe, Rashid Ali, , John Abercrombie,
From 1996 to 2001 Dan worked exclusively with Max Roach as Producer and Recording Engineer.
