Bennie Wallace is still one of the most exciting saxophonist on today's jazzscene. After leaving his native Tennessee in the late 70ies he gained immediate recognition in New York. The down beat magazin wrote: "Wallace is a big-tone player in the Hawkins / Webster / Ammons tradition whose cascades of notes, crisp tonguing and familiarity with the major stylistic braches of jazz give his improvisations unusual strenght and depth".Wallace' s voice strikes one immediately as so individual and secure because he has assimilated the salient traits of every conceivable past and present jazz style, transmuting them according to his own strong, unmistakable personality rather than becomig overwhelmed by the weight of tradition. During the 80's Wallace recorded with a.o. Chick Corea, Dr. John, Elvin Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Dave Holland etc. Most of the 90's he spent in Hollywood writing film music (f.e. White Man Can't Jump). " Live at the public theatre" was recorded 1978.Four of the songs on this CD were already released in the 80's on LP (same titel).
Eddie Gomez has been assosiated for many years with Bill Evans and also Jeremy Steig. His musical imagination and impeccable technique assure him a status as one of jazz' best bassists of all times.
Dannie Richmond worked for more than 13 years with a most demanding band leader - Charles Mingus. His familiarity with broken rhythms and his precise, crisp drumming made him the perfect percussionist for Wallace's daring music.
