The only new baritone saxophonist with any
class, said Ralph J. Gleason - one of the centurys most influential jazz
writers - about Pepper Adams. Leonard Feather praised him as one of the few true
giants of the baritone sax. Pepper Adams was born in Michigan, Oct. 8, 1930. He
moved to New York in 1956 and took up with Kentons band the following year. Later he
played with such greats as Benny Goodman, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, and the Thad
Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band. Adams was a three-time Grammy nominee, he won the donw beat
magazines New Star award in 1957, and he won the influential jazz publications
critics poll as baritone player at least six times. |
